ICHIGO (STRAWBERRY) POSTERS
24 x 36 inches each // 2007
Using the poster format as a sketchpad, I began to see how purely formal starting points could ultimately translate into conceptual content. For the Ichigo “flag,” I appropriated the graphic form of the traditional Imperial flag with sun rays emanating from the center, generally associated with pre-war Japan. The format of the flag, suspended vertically like a hanging scroll with a patterned border, suggests a hybrid of traditional forms. In another formal study, I created a grid based on the seed patterns of the fruit itself.
