Last month I started designing a book to house this information, and realized it was missing a pictorial layer. So although it’s late in the year, I started making icons to represent events that happen each day.

Some I’ve made so far:

I spent Tuesday at the Chinza Dopeness music video shoot for his upcoming release “Kanpai,” a song about drinking. I was pretty useless on set, but was excited to experience the whole process. It also made me a bit sad—I can’t stop thinking lately about how I still wish I had gone into film! In a new effort to create an icon each day for the rest of my grant period, I made these two of Chinza as two different characters.

After so long—YIKES, my birthday was over 2 months ago!—I’m finally getting back to posting. Following the last entry, I gave a short talk at Tokyo Pecha Kucha Night about my thesis work and current research, but unfortunately the preparation for this interrupted my flow. Afterward I was completely confused about what direction to go in, especially considering audience members’ enthusiasm for the kawaii stuff from my thesis, which I’m not really doing anymore. I liked the jewel idea conceptually, but didn’t know where the bedazzling was taking me. Luckily, my sister’s visit distracted me for two weeks, and then I started working as a pseudo-intern on a CD package design for Wieden+Kennedy Tokyo LAB. The deadline is quickly approaching and there is MUCH work to be done, so the next few weeks should get pretty interesting! Although this project has had its ups and downs, and hasn’t left much time for my own work, I’ve really enjoyed having a daily routine, a place to go, and regular social interaction. I’m also learning a different working process, which is always interesting. Below are some photos from my PKN presentation.

When people ask me to describe my research there’s always an awkward pause. “It’s a little, complicated… ,” I start. I don’t want to seem lazy or condescending, but it’s impossible to prepare a single appropriate response. The issue has come up a number of times recently because of the range of people I’ve met, professions including, but not limited to: designer, art director, artist, curator, writer, editor, anthropologist, school teacher, history PhD candidate, med student. Do I go for the kawaii angle—which requires an explanation of how I arrived at “cuteness” as a graphic visual language to avoid seeming entirely frivolous—or instead launch straight into my current interest in surface? Perhaps I should start at the beginning with my umbrella topic: visual language exchange between Japan and the West, which stems from my undergraduate research on Western Colonization and the Meiji Era. No, that’s a bit much …

I’ve realized this is itself a design problem, a matter of audience and framing. It’s not that I don’t know what to say, but rather what to leave out. Is this listener actually interested, or just being polite? Do they want a quick answer or a conversation? (This is pretty easy to gauge based on the number of follow-up questions.) Moving on … What does this person do? Are they a designer? If not, do they know what graphic design is, and why one would get an MFA in it? Do they know what Fulbright is? Should I mention Fulbright? (I don’t want to seem like a show-off, but I also want my research to sound legitimate, despite the bejeweling!) Do they live in Japan or are they just visiting? (I’ve often felt that my work resonates more for Westerners with some connection to Japan.) Are they male or female? (My work’s pretty girly right now.) Are they familiar with my thesis? Do the words “visual language” produce a blank stare or a knowing gesture? I could go on and on … the point is, I never know what I’m starting with, so there’s always a period of testing the waters. I’m still working out the best approach, because I don’t know how to explain this to you is probably not a good strategy!

Acknowledging this problem has inspired me to create a series of information graphics that parse out the various topics/phenomena in question. (To come.) I think this will clarify and simplify the research, and help me frame my work based on shifting contexts and parameters.

I’ve always heard people talk about the cherry blossom craze in Japan, but didn’t really understand what the big deal was until experiencing it firsthand. Aside from the fun outdoor drinking parties all week (hanami), the blossoms are arrestingly beautiful. And the fact that they are here and gone within a two-week period encourages one to spend as much time walking around outside as possible. I really enjoyed people watching at Yoyogi Park last Sunday, but my favorite spot is definitely the tree-lined river in Naka-meguro. Now the petals have started to fall and the water is spotted with light pink dots flowing downstream. Love!

Recently, my advisor drew this simple diagram to explain the difference between Japanese and Western conceptions of surface. While we generally value exterior as a direct extension/expression of core meaning (toward authenticity), in Japan omote (front) compliments, but is not necessarily derived from ura (back/hidden side). That surface may be (acceptably) detached from meaning seems especially counterintuitive from a designer’s perspective, as we are taught that each element should mean something. But this is what I love about Japanese visual culture, that there is room for the unexplainable, and that surfaces can be borrowed, reinterpreted and recombined in unexpected ways.

I’m obsessed with this type … While most of the design in the hostess magazine Ageha is totally offensive, somehow the gaudy, sparkle-clad aesthetic actually works on the cover. It almost emanates light! I love how the type knocks out of the twinkling haze, creating a play between form and counter-form. With their white halos the characters look simultaneously cut out of a scrim and raised off the page … just plain pretty typography for my mental filing cabinet : )

When giant nails prevent you from performing everyday tasks, there are products to help! I just found this ad for a special can opener in the magazine Nail Max. How else are you going to drink your Heineken??

But I figured I should put something up, so here are some things I’ve been fiddling with. First, a sketch of the new girl character I’m drawing to accompany Rabaa (a.k.a. “Lover”)—the heart-shaped character I created 4 years ago at RISD—just in time for Valentine’s Day. I was a little sad when Lauren (my sister) said she looked like Rabaa in drag! My mom said she needs hair, hmm… Second, some random jewels I’m cutting out to adorn type, photos, vector drawings, etc., but that’s not turning out like I envisioned either. Third, in-progress, bejeweled type studies. (More on this “UP!” business to come : )
