REKUSIKARU RABAA (aka Lexical Lover)
5 x 5 inches (book) // screenprint + mixed media // 2005
With the appropriation of verbal language as my jumping-off point, I created a screenprinted book based on the invented character Lexical Lover, pronounced “Rekusikaru Rabaa” when sounded out in Japanese. Rabaa’s back story describes a character caught between two worlds, often unsure whether he is speaking Japanese, English, or a combination of the two. Each spread pairs dictionary definitions of Japanenglish terms, with illustrations of Rabaa engaged in related activities. I later produced three-dimensional Rabaa Fuzzies.
